The first Workshop on Emerging Technologies for software-defined and reconfigurable hardware-accelerated Cloud Datacenters (ETCD2017)

The first workshop of Emerging Technology for Cloud Datacenters (ETCD 2017) was successfully held on April 8th, 2017 in Xi'an, Shaanxi, China, in conjunction with 22nd ACM ASPLOS conference. This new workshop is co-organized by the Research Center for Advanced Computer Systems (ACS) at the Institute of Computing Technology (ICT) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT) of CAS, Xilinx Inc. (APAC China), and Kumamoto University in Japan. Several distinguished scholars and experts from world-renowned research institutions were invited to this forum and presented their recent study and valuable experiences on the cutting-edge technologies in the field of software-defined datacenter, reconfigurable FPGA acceleration and FPGA-as-a-Service in the cloud. About 50 researchers and engineers from both academia and industry attended this workshop.

Professor Paul Chow from University of Toronto in Canada delivered a keynote speech to the audience entitled "Building the Reconfigurable Cloud Ecosystem", focusing on the current progress, challenge and the future direction in a number of key areas for building a reconfigurable cloud ecosystem. Following the keynote, Prof. Yun (Eric) Liang from Peking University (PKU), Prof. Jingfei Jiang from National University of Defense Technology (NUDT), Prof. Chengchen Hu from Xi'an JiaoTong University (XJTU), Mr. Jianlin (Austin) Gao, FPGA system architect from Tencent Inc., and Dr. Qian Zhao from Kumamoto University respectively presented their recent work in the related fields and shared insights on the future of FPGAs in the Datacenter and Cloud. In addition, Mr. Zihao Yu from ICT of CAS and other scholars from SIAT of CAS, Xidian University and Tianjin University also presented their new findings on software-defined architecture.

For better interaction between academia and industry during this forum, Xilinx, XJTU, Interwiser and ACS from ICT of CAS were specially invited to exhibit their hardware prototypes, covering two powerful hardware acceleration platforms (equipped with Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC and Virtex UltraScale+ FPGA chips), software-defined network systems, and custom-designed rack-scale memory semantic interconnect with full-system implementation. A lot of attendees stopped by the demo booths, discussed with developers about the architectures, design and usage scenarios of these four prototype systems.

The first ETCD workshop successfully established a well-organized and open platform for all participants to discuss techniques, ideas and collaborations towards the utilization of FPGAs and software-defined architectures; and these are believed to be must-have techniques for the next generation Cloud and Datacenters.
